Planning Department

Sphere of community Engagement

The Planning Department works to achieve sustainable development and improve the quality of life in Provincetown by supporting economic growth, environmental protection, and design quality. The key functions of the Planning Department are the development and implementation of the Local Comprehensive Plan, review of development proposals, and staff support of the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Conservation Commission, and Historic District Commission.

Local Comprehensive Plan Development and Implementation

The Planning Department is committed to engaging the community and working cooperatively to shape and promote a shared long-term vision for the future of Provincetown that reflects citizen input and community values.

Development Review

The Planning Department provides professional advice, technical expertise and practical alternatives for effective planning and management of development and redevelopment within Provincetown. We encourage innovative development, design solutions, and positive change that respect the historic built environment.

We work directly with citizens, consultants, designers, and other town staff on the permitting of site plans, special permits, subdivisions, and Historic District applications. We encourage at least one informal pre-application meeting with Planning and Community Development staff. Please contact Thaddeus Soulé, Town Planner, by calling 508-487-7000 x553 if you would like to set up a meeting.

Online Permitting

Users must apply for permits online, upload plans/drawings, documents, pay application fees, and all without visiting Town Hall or even Provincetown! You will be able to monitor and track applications throughout the plan review process, view comments, and print out receipts and documents.

First time users/applicants must first register and create a user account.  Once the user account has been established, you may proceed with your online application submission. Select the link - Online Services - on the Town’s website to continue to the On-line Permit Center.  Instructions can be found here.
