Day of Prayer and Remembrance
for the Victims of the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks

The Town of Provincetown joined in the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance with a ceremony at 12:00 noon at Provincetown Town Hall. The local observance was in accordance with a Presidential Proclamation Read the Presidential proclamation. More than 1000 members of our community gathered in Provincetown Town Hall to pray and honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks and of the fire, police, EMT and other public safety officials and rescue workers who put their lives at risk everyday. The ceremony included prayers from local denominations, signing, a poem read by Poet Laureate-Emeritus of the United States, Stanley Kunitz and a recognition of local Police, Fire and EMT personnel. This is a chronology of Provincetown Remembers.

Elizabeth Steele -Jeffers, Chair of the Provincetown Board of Selectmen recognized our local Police, Fire and EMT's who risk their life to protect our community followed by her thoughts and hopes regarding the attacks on New York and Washington D.C.

Rev. Canon Gregory Howe of St. Mary's Church recites the Prayer for Provincetown.
     
Stanley Kunitz, Poet Laureate-Emeritus of the United States, reads a poem Night Letter that he had composed in 1942.  
     
John Twomey, singer and restaurant owner leads the audience in the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
     
Greta Holman, representing the Jewish community reads Psalm 37 -A Psalm of David.
