Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council
During the spring of 2002, the Chiefs of Police of the Cape Cod Region entered into serious discussion over the immediate need to form a non-profit group to expand Police training and the procurement of specialized Police equipment within the area. Recognizing the unique features that our area offers, as a recreational and tourist destination, the Chiefs perceived a critical need to not only enhance the Police training, but to share resources to adequately protect the Cape Communities. We found that some necessary support resources for special emergencies or life-threatening situations could be hours away and this time delay could prove costly during times of emergency or crisis. The Chiefs of Police researched other local Police coalitions throughout the Massachusetts area and then put into motion a plan to combine some of the resources of our Departments to more efficiently assist our residents and visitors. In forming the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council, the Chiefs immediately sought funding from Federal, State and local Government sources. Today, after one year of progress, we are training over five hundred Cape Cod area Police Officers in the latest techniques of "Use of Less Lethal Force", "Rapid Deployment to High Risk Incidents", "Response to Emergencies in Public Buildings or Schools" as well as "Local Police Officer Survival.
The Towns of Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Mashpee, Nantucket, Orleans, Provincetown, Sandwich, Truro, Wellfleet and Yarmouth are members of the Council.
In August of 2002, each town sent a representative to a 10-day training program hosted at the Yarmouth Police Department on the instruction of "Rapid Response to Active Shooter" and "Less Lethal Munitions". Each Department representative successfully completed the 10-day course and is now certified to teach those topics.
