Minutes of  May 15,  2007

 

Members Present: Terese Nelson (Chair), Peter Grosso (Vice Chair), Debra Trovato, Shannon Patrick, and Kerry Adams (newly elected member)

Student Representative:  Jasmine Hadley   Absent:  Pele Berg

 

Others Present: Jessica Waugh, Superintendent of Schools,  Dr. Floriano Pavăo, School Principal,  Elizabeth Francis, Amelia Rokicki and others

 

The Chair called the meeting to order at 4:03 P.M.

 

Reorganization:

Peter Grosso made a motion to appoint Terese Nelson Chairperson.  Debra Trovato Seconded.  So Voted 4-0-1 (Shannon Patrick not present)

Terese Nelson made a motion to appoint Peter Grosso Vice Chairman.  Debra Trovato Seconded.  So Voted 4-0-1 (Shannon Patrick not present)

Ms. Patrick returned at 4:10 P.M.

Debra Trovato made a motion to appoint Shannon Patrick Secretary.  Terese Nelson seconded.  So Voted 5-0

 

Public Comments:

Ms. Patrick asked to speak.  The Chair asked Ms. Patrick to step down and join the audience to convey her public comments.

●  Shannon Patrick asked when the school committee would have a workshop for the school committee’s “vision”  resulting from the Future Conference.

 

Appreciation:

            Cape Cod Air and their generous donation of airplanes to fly our France bound

            students to Logan Airport in Boston

            DARE and DARE Officer Marty Menangas for his commitment, diligence

            and integrity in leading this worthwhile program

 

Minutes:

Peter Grosso made a motion to approve the  March 27, 2007 Minutes.  Debra Trovato Seconded.  So voted 5-0

 

Superintendent’s Update:

        →  Dr. Pavăo presented  to the committee a new report card format for  grades K-6

        → A “draft” of the Athletic Handbook was also presented by Dr. Pavăo.   Further            discussion will take place at a later meeting.

         →  The Pre-School Fair and Summer Pre-School information was presented by the         Superintendent 

        →  Crisis Protocol was discussed.  Dr. Pavăo will begin working with students this            week.

        →  NEASC Report for VMES and PHS – Ms. Waugh will report on after June 1st,          2007.

       →  MCAS – 2nd Cycle  Ms. Waugh reported was going very well; Grades 3rd,8th and 10th.

 

There was a brief discussion around a new scholarship, the Eddie O’Hara Scholarship.  Ms. Nelson was asked to sit on the committee, however, the committee is not quite ready at this point in time.  The Committee will be kept informed on the status of the scholarship.

None

 

New Business:

9.1   The committee reviewed and discussed a 6th Grade Class Trip request.  Debra Trovato made a motion to approve the request.  Peter Grosso Seconded.  So Voted 5-0

9.2  The Committee reviewed the 5th Grade request to attend Natures Classroom.  Debra Trovato made a motion to approve.  Kerry Adams Seconded.  So voted 5-0

 

Executive Session

Terese Nelson, chairperson, announced the committee is going into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing strategy with respect to collective bargaining.  On a unanimous roll call vote the committee went into executive session at 6:20 p.m.  Ms. Nelson announced the meeting will not reconvene in open session for the purpose of adjournment.
