Minutes of  September 26, 2006

 

Members Present:   Terese Nelson (Chair),  Peter Grosso (Vice Chair), Debra Trovato, Burton Wolfman (Secretary)

Excused:   Shannon Patrick

 

Also Present:   Jessica Waugh, Superintendent of Schools,  Anthony Teso, VMES Principal/DSS,  Dr. Floriano Pavao, PHS Principal

 

Others Present:   PHS Students: Helen Hemley,  Sean Roderick,  Jonathan Peres,  Pele Berg, Dimitri Papetsas,  PAE President: Sallie A. Tighe, Provincetown Banner reporter:  Debra Minsky

 

The Chair called the meeting to order at 4.05 P.M. following roll call vote of Committee members.

 

Public Comments:

There were no public comments.

 

Appreciation Acknowledgment:

The Committee acknowledged their appreciation to Selectman David Nicolau for his gift in support of the School’s instrumental music program.

 

The Committee and the Administration acknowledged the John and Abigal Adams Scholarship recipients. There were seven Provincetown High School awards:

            Nico Pace-Teubner

            Sean Roderick

            Racine Oxtoby

 

PHS Student Rep to PSC:

Dr. Pavao introduced  Pele Berg as the newly elected student representative to the School Committee.

 

Minutes:

Peter Grosso made a motion to approve the September 12, 2006 Minutes.  Seconded by Deb Trovato.  The motion carried 4-0

Superintendent’s Update

Ms. Waugh announced the VMES Open House is this evening  (September 26th),  and the PHS Open House is tomorrow evening on September 27th.   She also announced that the Superintendent and the Principals will be holding open office hours for parents and the community.  Mr. Teso will have open office hours on Wednesdays 1:00 – 3:00 P.M.

Dr.  Pavao will have open office hours on Thursdays 4:00 – 5:00 P.M., and Ms. Waugh will have open office hours on Wednesdays 1:00 - 3.00 P.M. 

 

The School District Web is functioning and will be introduced to parents in the coming days.  The School Committee’s link has also been established.  

 

The Schools will once again participate in two Lions Club competitions: Youth Speech Competition, and the International Peace Poster.

 

Unfinished Business:

Peter Grosso moved to table the Field Trip request to a further date. Seconded by Burt Wolfman.  The motion carried 4-0

 

New Business:  

No new business items

 

The School Committee began their Workshop

 

The Committee agreed to review the organization of sub-committees at its’ next meeting. Ms. Waugh explained the procedures, requirements and timetable of the Educational Quality Accountability office of the Department of Education. The Committee discussed implementation of District Planning, Mission Statements, Goals/Objectives and Long Term Strategic Planning

 

On a roll call vote the committee went into Executive Session for the purpose of discussion of union contracts.   The committee also voted to not return to regular session for the purpose of adjournment.

 

Committee went in Executive Session at  5:15 P.M.
