The Chair called the meeting to order 8:35 A.M.
The two groups discussed the current process for hiring a new recreation director. The School Committee members expressed their concerns about the implementation of summer programs. The group discussed the current planned activities for the summer and began to explore what additional activities could be coordinated between the Recreation Department and the Schools. Many activities for joint cooperation were identified and would be explored. It was noted by the Recreation Department that there was a critical unmet need for activities for children under five. The two groups indicated that they would jointly bring to the Selectmen at the May 9th meeting the information discussed and reviewed at this meeting.
The School Committee discussed with staff the PreK program plans and stressed that extended day or “after school activities” must be included. The program should start June 26th, 2006 and continue offering activities from 7:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M..
The School Committee discussed instrumental music noting there are currently 35 students enrolled in the program and it was critical not to simply drop the program without looking at alternatives means of sustaining it.
The Committee adjourned at 10:45A.M.
