Provincetown School Committee Meeting

FEBRUARY 7, 2005 HIGH SCHOOL ANNEX

Present: Terese Nelson (Chairperson), Peter Grosso, Debra Trovato, Molly Perdue, Burton Wolfman

Others Present: Dr. Colette Trailer, Edward Boxer, Anthony Teso, Elizabeth Freeman, Lisa Colley, Cynthia Packard Luster, Larry Luster, Tracy Roderick, Dennis Clark, Lisa Enos, Aga Pina Camella

The Chairperson called the meeting was called to order at 4:00 P.M. Public Comments:

Cynthia Packard Luster read a prepared statement concerning goals, policies, needs and practices of current school athletics. Among the items addressed were the following: Need to hire the best coaches and have an articulate assessment policy; program should have and maintain a full schedule; provide increased gym time for practice, have uniforms which match and fit; film games for promotion and instruction; maintain player statistics; develop informational packets about times and players to promote student educational and career advancement. She stressed the need for a vision statement regarding the role of athletics within the school programs.

Student (Aga Pino Camella) asked the Committee and the administration to address his concern and frustration that there was not sufficient flexibility for a student to participate in both athletic teams and extra curricular activities.

Minutes:

Peter Grosso moved to approve the minutes of January 11, 2005. Molly Perdue seconded the Motion. The motion passed 4-0-1 Debra Trovato abstained..

New Business:

Discussion with Recreation Department regarding 6r grade move-ups for sports. Lisa Colley, Tracy Roderick and Dennis Clark reviewed current practice and options. Lisa Colley supported the creation of sub-committee of interested parties to review policy and make recommendations to the Administration and School Committee. Debra Trovato and Molly Perdue volunteered to participate on behalf of the School Committee.

Discussion of making-up snow days:

Dr. Traitor distributed current calendar which authorized 185 days of instruction ending on June 29, 2005. Within the scope the school can meet its mandate despite the snow day losses. As a contingency measure the administration will explore with the union the


option of converting a professional development day, March 14 , into two half day
meetings.                                                       

Line Item Transfers:

Dr. Trailer explained the need for line item transfers to meet unanticipated repairs to the heating systems in both the VMES and the High School. The transferred funds would come from the High School Maintenance of Building line item.

Burton Wolfman moved to approve Line Item #10-4330-31-500-121 in the amount of $4287.00 to Line Item #10-4220-15-400-139. Molly Perdue seconded the motion. It was so voted unanimously.

Debra Trovato moved to approve Line Item #10-4220-31-400-147 in the amount of $5938.58 to Line Item #10-4220-15-400—139. Peter Grosso seconded the motion and it was so voted unanimously.

Other:

Dr. Trailer informed the Committee of an overnight trip for grades 5 & 6 on May 23, & 4. The trip will have three chaperones. Molly Perdue moved to approve. Burton Wolfman seconded the motion. It was so voted unanimously.

Meeting adjourned at 5:25 P.M.
