Recycling & Renewable Energy Committee

Minutes from 19 March 2008, Town Hall, 5-6pm

Attending: Michael Leger, Jim Deneitolis, Amy Germain, Ghee Patrick, Lee Bartell

Previous Minutes:  Amy moved to accept them, Michael seconded, they were approved 3/0

Proposition 2 and 1/2: We had a long discussion about what would happen to curbside trash/recyclables if it failed to pass at Town Meeting on 7 April.  David Guertin, Dir. of Public Works, and Sandra Turner, DPW Operations Director, came by, and said that if the override passed, it would cost the taxpayers $153,000.  If there are 3500 town residents, which one of the town websites says that there are, then the cost to each is just over 11 cents a day.  The 3 possibilities are: 1. there is no curbside pick up by the town (folks could take their trash/recyclables to the Transfer Station, or pay an outside trash hauler to come and pick up from them);  2. we go to a pay-as-you-throw system for trash, and recyclables will still be picked up;  3.  nothing changes from the current set-up.  Amy moved to support passage of the override for Article 2A (Residential curbside collection of solid waste and recyclable materials) with a provision that we have an expanded recycling program.  Michael seconded it, the vote was 4/0.

Earth Day:  We do have the firehouse for Earth Day, which we'll staff on Sunday, 20 April.  Lee reserved it from 10am-5pm, though we certainly don't have to be there all day.  She'll let Barbara Rushmore know, in case she wants to join us with her planting tree effort.

Next Meeting:

Wednesday, 2 April 2008, 5pm,

Town Hall, Provincetown
