Spring beach cleanup
April 23rd has been tentatively scheduled as the day of the
spring clean up. Jerry said that in the
meantime Steve Ellard from Brewster asked Jerry to call
him back on the week of April 23rd and he will come down and do a
demonstration of what his beach clean-up machine will do.
He will eventually need a contract and specific times for scheduled
clean-ups. Rex said that before the guy
even comes, Jerry should contact the ConCom (chair is
Dieter Groll) and ask them for their input and
probably attendance at the demonstration of the machine.
Rex also suggested that if some of you form a 2-person subcommittee and
attend the ConCom meetings, it would be valuable. Rex said that he will tag the derelict
beached boats some time in June.
Next discussed were possible locations for the clean-up, i.e., from the
kite shop west. Then came
the frequency which produced two suggestions:
3 times/year – spring, July 4th, and September. The second suggestion which seemed to gain
more favor was that once or twice a year should do it, once in the spring and
once in the fall.
The parking of the cleaning machine would just require a call to the
police from the Harbormaster to O.K. his parking adjacent to the MPL. Another possible parking place might be the
Jerry will call Dieter Groll to discuss plans
for the beach cleaning demonstration.
Any other business that shall properly
come before the Committee
Rex said they got the water testing quality grant and will set up a meeting
sometime in early May. He will try to get all the ducks in a row and
if we can get Wellfleet and our dates to coincide, it should be a successful
undertaking. Then we have to have enough
boats and groups to conduct the sampling.
Next we have to find money for the analysis; our immediate concern is
bacteria. We won't be able to determine
whether the coliform is human or animal. It will be interesting to see if they find a
hot spot.
Rex said he had recently gone to the Historic District Commission and
Polly Burnell and John Dowd sketched out a drawing
for the rental artisan shops that will be on the pier. There will be only two or three for openers because we don't want
to build 10 and not have them occupied. We’re
currently trying to think of marine related items (small sales and low impact). If the FAWC decided to use one of the sites -
they can rotate artists in and out of there in order to have a lot of coverage.
Adjournment happened at
