Meeting: February 22, 2007, 1:00 pm

Judge Welsh Room, Town Hall

Present:  Acting Assistant Town Manager/Grant Administrator Michelle Jarusiewicz, Steve Melamed/EDC, Bill Schneider/Administrative Director of Tourism, Chris McCarthy/PAAM, Jim Bakker/PMPM, Judy Cicero, Candy Collins-Boden/Chamber, Eileen Kennedy, Hersh Schwartz, Pru Sowers/Banner, John Shields/ICON Architecture

MCC Adams grant 2007: Town just awarded $30,000 under the 2007 program for “Wayfinding & Storytelling”, letter of intent submitted to County for License Plate grant.

Streetscape:  John Shields of ICON architecture presented preliminary Streetscape Report “ Concept Plan for the Provincetown Cultural Experience,” dated 2/8/07. Comments included:

·        Note that PMPM’s statistical drop in attendance is in part due to the fact that at one time they were open year-round and would often only charge $.25 or have free admission.

·        “Stories” available – who is going to write them?  -- part of the “Wayfinding & Storytelling” component in 07 grant will be to identify which stories we want told, how, and by whom. Will require some ongoing maintenance and operation.

·        Overall, everyone happy with the mix of traditional and new technology; fits with desire to want to still attract young people to Provincetown who are very techno-savvy.

·        Encourage kids art program.

·        The Meet/Meat rack – in front of town hall, everyone passes by, interactive.

·        Recycle bricks [from sidewalk] elsewhere – asphalt OK, street-print OK, brick pavers [like those in Lopes Square] OK, but bricks are tripping hazard.

·        Nothing is better than a live, trained, person, an ambassador. Need both human and technical interaction, keep kiosks. Possible to encourage volunteers [with Ambassador buttons and training]?

·        Wi-fi – any legal issues? What about restrictions to inappropriate web-sites? What about impact on businesses that offer wi-fi? Should/can it be restricted to certain areas?

·        Need to hi-light what we can do and what is affordable.

·        Next Charrette we will be looking for buy-in on the concept. It will only work if financially viable.

Next steps: report to be edited by ICON; then place on town’s website, distribute to partners and interested parties. Select date for Charrette #2 in mid-March or so.
