DISABILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
Minutes of meeting on May 23,2001.
The meeting was called to order at 5:40 pm in the Senior Room of
the Grace Gouveia building at 26 Alden St., Provincetown, MA
02657.
Members Present: Laurie Green, Terri Horwitz, Toni Schiff, Betty
Villari, Linton Watts.
The minutes were accepted as read.
Laurie Green announced her resignation. Laurie has given many
years of service to the Commission and has decided she needs to
make more time for other priorities. Accordingly, she turned over
her key to the Senior Center to Terri Horwitz.
Terri Horwitz asked the DPW about the problem of hedges which
overhang and protrude onto sidewalks. She was told that we should
note the places where these occur and then the DPW will send
notices to the owners.
There was a discussion about the mission and authority of the
Commission. It was decided to check with Town Hall for further
clarification.
Concern was expressed about the fact that the United Universalist
Meeting House is not easily accessible. Because the building is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it may not be
possible to modify the structure of the building. Terri Horwitz
volunteered to explore the situation and find out what
restrictions may/may not apply.
It was noted that Tedechi's store on Bradford St. has only one
parking space for handicapped vehicles which is in a difficult
place. It may be possible to move that space to the other parking
area which is located beside the ramp and much more easily
accessible for people with disabilities.
It was decided that we should send a letter of thanks to the DPW
for the new and improved crosswalks in town.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 pm.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept. 12,2001 at 5:30 pm in
the Senior Room at the Grace Gouveia Building at 26 Alden St.,
Provincetown, MA 02657.
