Meeting Agenda

Lisa Bowden asked for a few minutes of the Cultural Council’s time.  She said the primary reason is that she has been involved in an ongoing process to have a Provincetown walking trail updated.  The VSB has been trying to do it and the Adams Grant is working on the streetscape and is looking at doing imbedded art - similar to the Freedom Trail in Boston.  She has gone through Town this summer and has taken a picture of all the sites that have been mentioned and made notations on what was or is going on there.  What’s missing is 20th Century history.  There is also an oral history project that is currently in the works.  Lisa would like to see projects merge or have some overlap.

We’re thinking, Lisa continued, of having the walking trail printed in photographs which would have historic significance.  She’s also trying to say hello to the group and would welcome them to her task force group on Friday at the PAAM at 10:00 a.m.   At that time there will be a show and tell at the PAAM; it sort of a Work in Progress (WIP).  She ideally wants to get all this approved and also would enjoy have the artists’ input.

Michelle Jarusiewicz has asked us to look at some of our time as a match; they are looking for as many partners as they can get.  Lisa thanked the Council for their time and asked them to feel free to contact her with any questions or concerns that they may have.  Her e-mail is 4LBowden@gmail.com and her phone number is (917) 617-8036.

Motion:  Move to approve becoming a partner with the Adams Grant.

Motion:  Michael Wright   Seconded: Dorothy Antczak    Vote:  8-0-0.

Approval of past minutes

Motion:  Approve the minutes of the March 29th, May 7th, and May 21st meetings.

Motion:  Frank Vasello    Seconded:  Pasquale Natale       Vote:  8-0-0.

It was also noted that the minutes of May 14th and June 5th were not available since neither meeting had a quorum.

New round of grants

It was decided early on by the Council that only the grant applications from Provincetown would be considered.  Frank V. asked about the machinations of awarding grants, paper work involved, amount available, and a few other pertinent questions.  Applicants do not know that the focus is on applicants from Provincetown, there is $4K available, the award is given after filling out a simple form – and that’s basically it.

Cherie M. asked the group if they wanted to go through the applications at the meeting or would the Council rather take the applications home and study them for the next meeting.  Everyone opted to take the applications home.

Art in Public Places site & RFP for the AIDS Memorial – update, next steps

          -Where

          -Money

-When should we send out RFP

          -other sources of funding

The group now has $15,000 from the VSB and approximately $3,000 more has been raised for this project.  It was thought that an additional application could be made to the VSB because the Cultural Council anticipates doing some art for the streetscape plan.  If they could get an additional $10K – there were many thoughts on the “how much” and “what for” but none of them were concrete plans.  Cherie M. was also doubtful that the Waterfront Park will ever happen because it’s been delayed for so long.  In an effort to be gracious, Frank Vasello offered to write a letter to the Provincetown Art Commission and invite them to help us choose an appropriate piece of work to donate to a public place.

Provincetown Poet Laureate 08

It was said that the Council has to decide on someone really soon.  Last year Chad Edwards, a high school student, was named and received a stipend of $750 for reading his poem at the beginning of Town meeting and then did work this summer at the library.

Ideally the Council would like to have Mary Oliver as their official poet laureate this year and Michael Wright volunteered to ask her personally.  They have $1,500 to offer her and it would also entail a token gift of time to the Town – perhaps designing a cover for the town meeting booklet – or a talk to the local junior high – or a similar request.  Criteria should be established to go along with this award.

New Members update

Richard Olson who was unfortunately absent is the “new kid on the block.”  There is also one other opening.  Patricia Ann DeLuca is still on the Council and Cherie will call her to see if she wants to continue her membership.  Frank V. had a question, “Why so many people on the Council (12)? – Most committees have far fewer members.”

New Business

Our budget went up an insane amount – everyone else’s went down.

Other Business

We nominated Marian Roth for an award and she got it.

One of the applications was for chamber music from a group in Chatham.  It was looked upon as promising.

Frank V.– back tracking – asked if  anyone thinks a good place for a piece would be out at the Waterfront Park.  This wasn’t met with much enthusiasm because it was thought to be a rather crowded area.

The next meeting is Tuesday 30th?  4:00 p.m. -  or Nov 1st?  or Mon 29th ,  Stay tuned.

Adjournment happened at 5:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Evelyn Gaudiano
