MINUTES of the Committee Meeting on August 29, 2002

Provincetown Town Hall

 

Attending:       Kerry Adams (vice-chair), Don Richards, John Thomas (chair), Barb Prato, KC Smith, Pat Patrick

 

Meeting called to order at 5:00 pm.

 

The Committee met with Bill Burke, CCNS Branch Chief for Cultural Resources and Historian; and Sue Moynihan, Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources. The Committee members described their experiences with CCNS, and CCNS staff discussed their professional background and experience at other National Park Service units.

 

The Committee members discussed important traditional ways of life, including but not limited to, recreation, community cranberry bogs, history, traditional gathering of beach plums, blueberries, and rosehips, gathering and foraging at Pilgrim Lake, traditional sites, camping, beach access, interactions with rangers, beach buggy access, dune shacks, salvage and fishing rights, jet skis, hunting, fishing, maintenance of historic structures, differences in use between off-season and summer season, Wood End, beach permits for residents, vernacular landscapes, privacy of local places, printed materials and language, Long Point, community diversity, oral histories, collaboration in cultural resource projects, and community forums.

 

The Committee adjourned at 6:35 pm.
