COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD MEETING - SEPTEMBER 14, 2006

Present:  Chair, Gerry Brennan, Paul Mendes, Greg Howe, Alt. Kay Vogt
Others: Vern Wilson, Friends; Gladys Johnstone
Absent: COA Director, Val Carrano; Secy., Ilene Charles, Florence Anderson
Meeting called to order by Chair at 3:05 pm.
Minutes from the June 8th meeting were accepted without change.

FRIENDS OF THE COA: Vern Wilson announced bake sale successful and raised $647.  Could have sold more.  Need to develop master list of bakers.  (Gerry will attempt.)  Will use the new stove at COA to bake and use the sandwich board to advertise bake sale on Commercial St.  Had some trouble with lock and had to have police open/close.  Also, area not cleaned up by ASGCC, who thought they had space instead of us.  Action Item:  Jan 1, ensure space is reserved for us for Memorial and Labor Day weekends.  Set up communications links to avoid having too many volunteers at one time and not enough at other times in advance of bake sale.
The friends purchased a new stove for the COA (round of applause for Vern's hard work in this purchase.)  Napi helped with decision and Joe Travato (refrigeration, new at selling stoves) sold and installed stove for us as well as removing old stove.

SALT COUNCIL: Greg Howe indicated there has been no further movement on Truro merger.  He was surprised to learn that there are no Ptown residents in the Safe Return program for Alzheimer patients. Action item:  Greg to speak with Val.  There is a new e-mail scan so everyone is advised not to open any email unless you are familiar with the sender.  The next meeting, Dec. 7th, will include info on Iris Scans for seniors.  Greg asked Paul to attend with him.  Several articles on senior safety were given to Gladys to include in the newsletter.

Paul Mendes discussed EMT reporting.  He has spoken to several EMT's who indicated that there is always a neighbor, friend, or relative available on their calls.  They have not been filling out the additional form as they have interpreted it as not necessary.  Paul will be meeting with Val to discuss this when she returns on the 25th.  He has suggested that all reports that are sent to Joyce be faxed to Val for review.  Paul will also ask Val to invite acting Police Chief Tobias to our next meeting in order to set up better liaisons between the COA and PPD.

We will give the acting Police Chief Tobias a Certificate of appreciation to be handed to Carrie Benjamin and Rachael Peters for their many actions on behalf of the COA.

ADDITIONAL OLD BUSINESS:
CELL PHONE PROJECT:  NOCA is sponsor.  We will collect and the PPD will send off.  We get credit and they send back to us.  Right now, there are 3 available as 911 phones.  Will advertise in the Newsletter for the next few months, asking for phones to be donated.  Also, Gerry will check with Barbara Prato to see if there are old cell phones at transfer station now and if we can put up sign asking for them.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION LUNCHEON: General consensus, very, very excellent!

SENIOR OF THE YEAR LUNCHEON:  Large turnout, superb food.  Gerry to send thanks you.

NEW BUSHES: Beautification Committee and DPW planted small bushes in the front.  Gerry sent thank you to the committee and the DPW.

DPW SEWER WORK:  No further update expected until work scheduled.

AARP MASS SENIOR OF THE YEAR NOMINATION:  Vern Wilson received letter indicating he was not chosen but was invited to the luncheon along with Greg.

NEW BUSINESS
2 MONTH CALENDAR:  Sept:  no activities scheduled; Oct:  Halloween luncheon (Wed).

SEASHORE POINT ADVISORY COUNCIL:  Gerry reported they have 19 residents signed up and need 6 more for a favorable borrowing rate.  Ground breaking scheduled for Oct.

NEW ARCHIVE BOOK purchased with Friend’s funds.  It’s our 3rd book.

FALL CLASSES:  Gerry will call Gail Brown and Steve Kennedy to see if they will run classes again this year.  The cooking classes do not have a specific person available to arrange for weekly classes this year.  The decision was to try and have several people talk with local chefs they know and see if we can get some classes scheduled.  Greg will talk with Paul Fanizzi, Gerry will see if Ilene can speak with Betsy of Bayside  Betsy's.

ANY NEW IDEAS FOR CLASSES OR PRESENTATIONS?

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:10pm.  The next meeting will be held on October 9 2006, at 3:00PM in room #10 of the Grace Gouveia Bldg.

Respectfully submitted,

Kay Vogt
