COUNCIL ON AGING
BOARD MEETING MINUTES May 1, 2003
Present: Brunetta Wolfman, Anita Berman, Gladys Johnstone, Gerry Brennan, Dir. Valerie Carrano, Friends: Marge Perry, Florence Alexander
Minutes from the April 3, 2003 Board Meeting were approved as corrected – to be e-mailed by secretary to Town Clerk.
Public Comment:
Barbara Rushmore requested a hearing but was not
present.
Correspondence:
· B. Wolfman received response letters from State Sen. O’Leary and State Rep. Gomes regarding the Governor’s Plan to reorganize and diminish the importance of the State Office of Elder Affairs.
· B. Wolfman wrote to Berkeley regard taxi chits to Seniors
· B. Wolfman wrote personally to Mark LaToure regarding the Mary Lewis house and that it could be used for affordable housing while waiting for the estate to be concluded.
· B. Wolfman to respond to Evelyn Gaudiano’s letter to Betty Steele-Jeffers and Kelly Kelman complaining about what she considered lack of cooperation from the COA in helping the seniors to sell their artwork at the May 3rd Craft Fair. Board found Ms. Gaudiano’s requests inappropriate.
Director’s Report:

Roslyn Garfield named Provincetown’s Senior Citizen of
the year! Breakfast to be held on 5/19. Anyone interested in attending the
breakfast, please sign up.
·
Volunteer Recognition Luncheon to be held on 5/16.
· COA looking for paintings by seniors to be hung in the newly painted dining room.
·
There will be a COA Open House on Thursday afternoon on
6/19.
·
Noon - 6/20 – the first Hot Dog Roast.
·
A spokeswoman from the Lower/Outer Cape Community
Coalition called regarding the health care crisis on the Cape. Would like to speak to our seniors and try
to education them to write to their legislators on this subject.
·
Legislative update – the COAs will be kept under the
EOEA.
Friends:
·
Marge Perry reported that 3 people attended the by-pass
surgery forum and Doreen Devlon would like to hold another seminar.
·
$211 worth of cushion sales was reported from the
Annual Town Meeting.

Need more volunteers for TRIAD. They have only 3 participants from COA. F. Alexander volunteered.

COA welcome-letter status. V. Carrano is finishing address corrections.

Beauty is Ageless Event is taken off the calendar due
to lack of participation.
·
Boston Post Cane – F. Alexander’s nephew made the
replica. She asked V. Carrano to make a
certificate of presentation to give with the cane. Next recipient is Charlotte Motta who would like to receive it on
her birthday, July 21. Questions with
Town Hall. B. Wolfman to speak with Town Clerk.
·
VCR – Steve Roderick is trying to locate a VCR to gift
the COA. B. Wolfman to call him for an
update.
·
Form letters to the State legislature were handed out
at Bingo for people to sign. Form
letters will be used as much as possible for these issues.
New Business:
· Annual elections were held and B. Wolfman was again elected Chair of the COA Board, G. Brennan, Recording Secretary.
· Since Roberta Elliott has missed three consecutive meetings, the Alternate position will be taken over by Florence Alexander.
· Since it is now time for the annual Town-wide Policy Goal Setting, B. Wolfman asked that we review last year’s goals, and give input to this year’s goals at the June Board meeting.
· G. Brennan suggested that we also might want to review the Town calendar to see where the COA might fit in.
There being no further business, it was motioned and
seconded to adjourn the meeting. The next meeting will be June 5, 2003 at
3:00p.m. in room #6 of the Grace Gouveia Bldg.
