attachments that are not included here in this format. The official, complete
paper copy can be viewed during regular office hours, Monday - Friday:
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Office of the Town Clerk, 260 Commercial St. Provincetown,
MA 02657.
Present: Nyla Ahrens, Neva Hansen, Julie Heller, Rosemary Hillard
Absent (Excused) Sandy Fay
Meeting was held in Town Hall. Julie called the meeting to order at 5:14 p.m.
1. PAAM
Julie read a letter from Jim Zimmerman of the Provincetown Art Association
and Museum dated March 19, 1999, requesting the loan of the Town's Hawthorne
Painting "Crew of the Philomena Manta" for their exhibit August 20 -September
21st of this year. Rosemary stated that she had sent a slide of the painting
to the Babcock Gallery in NY for their use in preparing materials for the
show and that she has notified PAAM that they need to submit a formal loan
agreement for the loan of the painting(s.)
Rosemary made a motion that the Art Commission offer PAAM the loan of
both of the Town owned Hawthorne paintings that currently hang in Town
Hall. Second by Nyla. Unanimous approval.
Julie agreed to verbally notify PAAM of our decision and follow through
to obtain a formal loan agreement that will insure PAAM provides adequate
insurance and responsible, professional transport of the works. She will
also discuss the possibilities of PAAM providing us with better slides
of these two paintings so we can use them for purposes of reproduction.
Neva agreed to explore getting large format photos to replace the images
in Town Hall for the duration of the PAAM exhibition.
IL Restoration Work
• Julie reported that work on the Moffett mural has been completed except for installation of
the protective Plexiglas covering. She reported that Khristina Bird photographed the murals
before, during, and after restoration and she will pursue getting copies of these slides for
the Art Commission records.
• Julie also reported that restoration is under way on the L'Engle "Acrobat" painting
and the Kasselau portrait of Frank Days. The next work targeted for
restoration is "Expecting Motherhood,- also located at the High School
(this painting currently has a piece of black electrical tape over a hole
in the canvas.)
111. COA
Rosemary reported that slides will be given to Diane Corbo at the Council
on Aging on April 15. Once they decide which works they would like these
will need to be cleaned and repaired if necessary before hanging.
Provincetown Art Commission Minutes of meeting: April
14,1999
IV. Brochure
Nyla reported she will contact Ewa at Shankpainter Printing to begin
work on the brochure again. Julie has agreed to provide all the dates needed
within a week so the work can proceed.
IV. Beneker
Rosemary reported that a letter will be submitted to the Board of Selectmen
on April 15, 1999, recommending return of the Beneker painting to PAAM.
V. FAWC
Rosemary agreed to contact Hunter O'Hanian at the Fine Arts Work Center
to see if he has any further information on their proposed show.
NEW BUSINESS
Heritage Museum
The Town of Provincetown owns a number of valuable pieces of art work,
many of which are currently housed in the Heritage Museum. Julie addressed
concerns that much of the art in the Heritage was specifically donated
to the Heritage Museum (not the Town) and we may have to explore return
of work to donors if the Heritage ceases to operate as a museum.
REVIEW OF MINUTES
Motion by Julie to approve the minutes of the February 10, 1999 meeting.
Second by Rosemary. Unanimous approval.
