Members present: Neva Hansen, Peter Garvas, Constance Black,  Peggy Prichett   absent: Phillip Retzky, Diane Shumway

FAWC SHOW : Hunter O’Hanian (director) and Melanie Braverman (summer program coordinator) were guests of the commission.  Hunter spoke about how successful the show of town art at FAWC had been and how they would like to have another show during the Fall Arts Festival which would run for two weekends, Sept. 21st and the following weekend.   They wished to concentrate on smaller work.  Connie Black made a motion to accept their proposal to have a show of town work at FAWC.  Peggy Prichett seconded the motion.  The vote was unanimous.  It was decided that Hunter would find a curator.  Neva suggested Dale Fanning, the director of the Heritage Museum since much of the work will come from the museum.  Jim Bakker, the president of PAAM was also suggested.  The commission will take care of getting permission from the town after the work is picked.  Connie Black has the slides and will make them available to the curator(s). Connie Black asked if there could be a slide show concurrently at FAWC.  Hunter will see if he can find a date.

Minutes of May 24 reviewed. Peter Garza mad a motion to accept.  Neva Hansen seconded the motion seconded the motion.  Vote was unanimous.

Treasurer’s Report  Peter Garza reported that he has signed off on the final figures of the budget.

Operating budget- $2,208.00

Guardianship fund-$4,950.00

Mellon Grant-$3,422.00

The encumbered funds must be signed before July 16.  Fortunately no funds will have to be encumbered. The Plexiglas estimate is $648.00 and the restoration of the Blanch Lazelle is estimated at $1,700-$2,000.

To build flat files is estimated at $1,200.  This money will come from the Guardianship Fund.

Neva Hansen gave Peter Garza the $500.00 check from the Mellon Fund.  Julie Heller informed her that the person who handles the grant prefers to remain anonymous.

In total we have about $8,000.00 available for the coming year.

Old Business  Stefan Nofeld informed Peter Garza that it might be a problem if he is on Board of Trustees of the Heritage Museum because he is a close abutter.  For this reason he didn’t apply for the position.  Peggy Pritchett volunteered to apply in his place.  She will attend to it after the meeting.

Peter Garza called Benson and Young about insurance.  A claim has been put in on the Chaim Gross sculpture, “The Tourists” to clean off the paint.

It was decided to invite Richard Pepitone to the next meeting of the Art Commission to clear the air about fixing his sculpture.  Neva will write a letter.

Neva read a letter from the Board of Selectmen about a possible show in Town Hall.  After discussion it was agreed that it would be too difficult to have a large show this year, but that we could try to rehang the present works and add a few more and have a showing of those.  Also, since FAWC will be having a show at that time it would be redundant.  Peggy will ask the Wellfleet library about their hanging system(cost, etc) to see if it would be feasible.

Peter Garza reported that he has not been able to get in touch with Michele, the grant administrator.  It was suggested that he talk to the town manager since there is a time constraint.

New Business Neva Hansen read a letter from Rachel White about having a town flag which could be hung at half mast if a town official passed away since we are not allowed to do this with the US flag?  Neva suggested a contest to find a design.  A flag already exists with the town seal but it is very drab.  Peggy Prichett made a motion that we ask the selectmen if we can have a competition to find a design for a flag.  Connie Black seconded the motion.  Vote was unanimous.  Neva will write to the selectmen.

Neva showed the commission a calendar put out by Plymouth England and suggested a town calendar using town art as well as doing cards.  It was decided that we would make note of pieces as we review them that would be appropriate.  We felt that it was a good idea and should be pursued further.
