Meeting Convened: 10:10 am

Members present: Neva Hansen, Peter Garza, Constance Black, Phillip Retzky, Peggy Prichett excused.

  1. Proposed Acquisition Considered the drawing of Paul Cristo by F. Ron Fowler for acceptance into the collection of the town.  Neva created an acquisition form.  Constance Black made a motion that the portrait of Paul Cristo be accepted by the town for the collection.  Seconded by Peter Garza.  Accepted unanimously.  The donor will keep the drawing in his possession until the art commission decides when and where to exhibit piece.  He will also fill in the form and return to commission.  Philip Retsky suggested that a space be provided on form for a history of piece.  Neva will modify form.

  1. Minutes  Minutes of April 25th meeting were reviewed.  Peter Garza made a  motion to accept.  Neva Hansen seconded the motion.  The minutes were accepted without change unanimously.

  1. Acquisition Policy Neva read a letter from the Board of Selectmen confirming their vote to accept the amended version of the Acquisition Policy.

  1. Heritage Museum  The commission had a discussion about the difficulties accessing the museum because of the director, Dale Fanning, not returning messages.  As a result we had to cancel our scheduled meeting at the museum.  Neva read letter which had been sent to Dale Fanning which had no response.  Apparently this is a problem for everyone.  Neva read letter that she had composed to send to the Board of Trustees of the Heritage Museum discussing these problems and asking for a meeting with them to iron out difficulties. Constance Black made a motion that the letter be sent.  Seconded by Peter Garza.  Vote was unanimous.  Constance Black made a motion that if answer is not received by  June 9 (two weeks) Neva is authorized to approach the town administration about problem.  It was agreed by all that this problem must be resolved before we can proceed any further since the bulk of the collection is at the Heritage Museum.  Peter Garza seconded.  Vote was unanimous.

  1. Goals  Neva read letter from Asst. Town Manager about meetings on June 5 to discuss goals of commission.  There will be a public hearing on June 26 to discuss these goals.  This led to a discussion about priorities.  Peter Garza suggested the following list:

a.Heritage Museum

b.insurance

c.bronzes

d.slides and cataloguing (finish)

e.marketing and publicity

f.exhibiting policy

g.grants-how to get funds

6.Exhibition Policy  Constance Black passed out some suggestions.  The commission will take home and come in with suggestions.

7.Richard Pepitone Neva has sent the letter drafted by Peggy Prichett to Richard Pepitone inviting him to a meeting.

8.Brochures We need more brochures at Town Hall.  Neva will approach the Tourist Board about some funds.

9.Treasurer’s Report Peter Garza suggested that we have a treasurers report at each meeting as part of the agenda.  Peter Garza made a motion to have a treasurer’s report at each meeting. Constance Black seconded.  Vote was unanimous.  Peter reviewed his report.  There was a discussion of encumbered funds.  So far we have a bill for the plexiglass.  Neva will get information on estimates of cost of material that Julie Heller will provide.  Peter Macara will be paid $12.00 an hour for moving and hanging work.  We will have to estimate how many hours he will work.

10.Bronze Restoration Peter Garza reviewed estimates on bronze sculpture restoration.  It was recommended by several experts that we do not use Stuart Dean who made the estimates.  We have several names of good firms.  We will see if the town can apply for a grant to bring someone here to look over sculpture.  This can be done in the early fall.

Next Meeting Wednesday, May 31 at 10:00 am at town Hall.  We will invite David Guertin to attend to discuss grants and bronze restoration.

Meeting Adjourned  12:30 pm.
