The Art Commission  - Acquisition Policy

1.     The Art Commission has the authority to decide which works of art will be accepted to form part of the Provincetown Art Collection

2.     The Art Commission must see and examine each work of art before it has rendered a decision to accept it into the town collection.  If physical examination is not practical, photographs with all explanation information on the work of art will be considered as an alternative.

3.   The Art Commission will have the authority to accept or reject an “estate bequests”

left to the Town of Provincetown.

4.     The Art Commission will qualify the condition of each work of art being donated.  If the condition of the proposed gift is such that it places an excessive cost burden on the town to house, restore, frame, or repair, the Art Commission may decide to decline the gift.

5.     The Art Commission shall not be bound to accept any gift with conditions placed upon the accepting of the work of art, i.e.: where or how to exhibit, how to frame or care for the work of art, etc.

6.     The Art Commission has the final decision on how to restore, house, or care for the work of art that is has acquired for the town’s collection.

7.     The Art Commission will also consider the following criteria for the acceptance of a work of art.

A)   Preference will be given to works of art created by a living or deceased artist who has a connection to Provincetown.

B)    Works with appraisal documents will be encouraged since the valuation is essential for insurance purposes.

          C)  Works which because of their historical importance and or value, do not fit the

       above criteria.
