Chairman’s Report

Stephen Borkowski distributed copies of the Treasurer’s report to all the members.  The report showed what has been spent so far this fiscal year and how much money is left.  The fiscal year ends June 30.

New Business

Mr. Borkowski said that the new Town Manager, Sharon Lynn, has requested some paintings from the Town’s collection for her office.

Amy Heller said that the photography has gone well and is almost finished.  With Mr. Borkowski’s help about 180 photographs have been taken.  Most of them are on the website.

The discussion then turned to the bronzes which the Town owns.  Georgia Coxe said that she has contacted the DPW about the Bas-relief.  There is a crack which allows cement to run down and damage the Bas Relief.   Nothing has been done so far.  The Commission discussed this and some of the other bronzes, such as “The Tourists” in front of the library.  Ms. Coxe will contact the DPW again about the Bas Relief.

Artist Brian Larkin has offered to donate a watercolor to the Town.  Stephen Borkowski passed around a picture of the painting.  The Art Commissions policy has been to not accept artworks from living artists.  Although they appreciated the watercolor, they declined the offer.

A motion was made to bring the Brian Larkin watercolor into the Town’s collection.

Stephen Borkowski urged the members to attend the Conflict of Interest Workshop on June 6th at Town Hall.

Jim Bakker suggested that the Art Commission purchase some Art Guards to protect some of the Town’s paintings.  The members discussed other methods to protect paintings.  After some discussion it was decided to purchase one set to see how they work.

A motion was made to purchase one set of Art Guard alarms (ten alarms per set).

Stephen Borkowski said that there were still Town-owned works of art at Cape End Manor (Seashore Point).  They will be removed before the building is torn down, but the Commission decided that a loan agreement should be drawn up to make it clear that they were the Town’s property.  Mr. Borkowski said he would talk to Doug Johnstone about the loan agreement.

The discussion turned to works of art which might be in individuals’ offices.  They said that individuals may hang their own pictures, but they cannot accept artwork on behalf of the Town.

Doug Johnstone came by to deliver a message from Debbie DeJonker-Berry, Library Director.  She said that the Library has agreed to build a protective structure around “The Tourists.”

The next meeting will be sometime in June.

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 4:35 p.m..
