Provincetown Art Commission
Minutes
April 22, 2004, 3 PM Meeting
Caucus Hall - Town Hall
The meeting was opened by the Chairman at 3:03 PM.
In attendance were Stephen Borkowski, Chairman; Georgia Coxe and Peggy Prichett. Peter Siegel, Vice Chairman was excused with notice. In attendance by invitation was Collections Manager, Robyn Watson.
It was noted that Michael Bunn, alternate had tendered his resignation.
The Chairman presented the minutes of the February 26, 2004 meeting for review. There being no comments or changes, Peggy Prichett made a motion to accept the minutes as presented, Georgia Coxe seconded and the minutes were accepted by unanimous vote.
Robyn Watson presented a written report to the Commission outlining some initial recommendations which were discussed at length. A number of pieces were brought to the attention of the Commission that could be excluded from the inventory and numbering system, as they were not original works of art. It was agreed that these pieces would be segregated, at the discretion of the Collections Manager, and not included in the numbering system.
Robyn Watson recommended making available to the public a weekly tour of the painting in the Town Hall collection available during July and August, which she would conduct. The Commission discussed and ultimately agreed with her recommendation and asked her to present the idea to the Town Manager for his approval.
After a lengthy discussion, it was agreed that the priorities, to be executed by the Collections Manager would include a new inventory and checklist of the collection, the placement of works of art on paper to flat storage, the re-hanging of the paintings at the high school auditorium, a rotation of works currently on view at Town Hall and obtaining estimates for conservation and reframing of works as determined. It was agreed that preparation of a new brochure for the Town Hall collection would be delayed until the works on view had been changed.
Stephen Borkowski reported that the French Library in Boston would be pleased to host an exhibition of works by Provincetown artists who had painted in France from the Town collection. Their gallery space would be available for March 2005. It was agreed to proceed with negotiations for such exhibition.
Their being no further business or discussion, Peggy Prichett made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Georgia Coxe seconded. The meeting was adjoured at 4:50 PM.
Stephen Borkowski,
Acting as Secretary
