PROVINCETOWN ART COMMISSION

Minutes for May 28, 2002

A regular meeting of The Provincetown Art Commission was held at the Provincetown Town Hall on May 28, 2002.  Attending were: Connie Black, Chair;

Georgia Coxe; Peggy Prichett, Treasurer; and Steven Borkowski, alternate member.  Also attending were Stephen Nofield, Town Clerk and Liz McLean.

Diane Shumway was excused.  Terry Catalano was not present.

Meeting opened at 3:00 P.M.

There were no minutes from the previous meeting.  Connie Black will get a list

of available secretaries so that we can hire someone to record minutes.

Jim Zimmerman, with the help of members of the Art Commission, Dick Caouette, and Liz McLean, has completed photographing the following:

     1) Paintings at Town Hall

     2) Works under glass from Town Hall, Cape Manor, Library, High School,

          DPW, and the C.O.A.

     3) Paintings from Cape Manor, Library,  High School, DPW, C.O.A. and the

  Heritage Museum.

Connie thinks two more sessions will complete the job.

Georgia reported on the completion of the cleaning and waxing of the Chaim Gross “Tourists” by the Paul King Foundry.  The cost was $700 which was

paid for from insurance money received for that work.

The cost to repair Richard Pepitone’s sculpture will be approximately $1700.  To replace part of the sculpture with bronze is estimated to cost

$8,000.  Discussion followed as to whether it would be appropriate to change the sculpture by replacing steel with bronze.  No action was taken.

Georgia read a letter from the King Foundry explaining what they had done and made the following recommendations:

     1)  the sculpture should be re-waxed every year

     2)  sculpture should be completely re-done in six years

All agreed that Georgia should ask the foundry to begin work on the sculpture on

Town Hall green in the fall.

Steven move to accept the Treasurer's Report as stated, seconded by Georgia and unanimously approved.

Connie read the Policy Goals of the Commission that she had  formulated.   Stephan Nofield complimented her on the document as the most articulate and

thorough expression of the goals of the Commission that he had seen presented. There were a few corrections and additions.

Stephan informed the committee that the plan for merging the Pilgrim Monument with the Heritage Museum had not been approved.  He also stressed the

importance of security for the Town Art Collection, especially the paintings hanging at Town Hall.  Peggy will ask Babe about insurance coverage for

the collection.

Georgia moved that the Agnes Weinrich painting should be sent out for conservation, seconded by Stephen Borkowski and unanimously approved.  Connie

will follow through.

Discussion followed concerning the hiring of a Collection’s Manager.  Connie will draw up a list of responsibilities and duties and we will schedule a

date for an interview with Robert Gambone, who has expressed and interest in the job.  Liz McLean offered that she would be interested in applying for

the job and she was encouraged to submit a resume.

Steven Borkowski informed the Commission that he would like to donate a painting to the Town, in memory of his late partner.  A gift fund would have

to be established for this purpose and Peggy and Steven will contact the Finance Director.

Covering the murals at the High School was discussed, but no action taken.

Steven reported on the requests for transparencies of the Blanche Lazell’s in the collection for the book being compiled by the West Virginia

University.  He will keep in contact with them.

Peggy moved to adjourn the meeting at 4:40 P.M., seconded by Steven and unanimously approved.

Respectfully submitted,

Peggy R. Prichett
