Commercial Street Reconstruction Project
Starting Monday October 15, 2012 the Commercial Street Reconstruction Project will commence. The first phase of construction will be the removal and replacement of the existing drainage structure. Drainage work will begin at Johnson Street and continue towards Winthrop Street. Limited road closure and pedestrian access will result during this phase but detour signs will be posted.

Following the drainage work will be the removal of the existing brick sidewalks, pedestrian traffic will be redirected to ensure safe passage down Commercial Street. The bulk of the reconstruction project will begin after the sidewalk removal. Starting at Johnson Street working towards Winthrop Street road closure will occur on a two block basis and will be closed for approximately 5 days.

Evening access will be restricted to local residents and emergency vehicles but whenever possible limited access will be provided to all pedestrians. Commercial Street will be open during the weekends and Holidays through-out the project.

When the bulk construction has been completed the heavy construction crew will move on to the next 2 blocks while the stone masons remain in the area rebuilding the sidewalks. Work will continue during the winter months reconstructing the sidewalks. Preparation will be made during March for the final pavement layer to be laid sometime in April. The Commercial Street Reconstruction Project is scheduled to be completed by May 1, 2013.

The Board of Selectman voted to extend the parking ban on Commercial Street from Johnson Street to Winthrop Street starting November 1, 2012 through March 31, 2013. A no parking on Commercial Street is necessary to avoid work delays for this aggressive work schedule and will aide in getting the job done on time.

There will however be Commercial Street parking permitted from 5:00 pm on Friday through 2:00 am Monday as well as on Holidays. This will allow locals and visitors alike to have access to the shops and restaurants throughout the winter.

While we understand the inconvenience this may cause you, after this important project is complete we will have a beautifully constructed road way we can all be proud of.
