Provincetown
continues to issue licenses to out-of-state same-sex couples intending
to reside in Massachusetts*. 1,732 same-sex couples file
marriage intentions in Provincetown since May 17, 2004.
| *As
of June 17, 2008, California
same sex couples no longer need to declare an intention to reside
in Massachusetts after marriage since California now offers
marriage to same sex couples in that state. |
| *Rhode
Island same-sex couples do not need to declare intentions
to reside in Massachusetts after marriage due to a September
2006 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling that found
the Rhode Island laws do not explicitly prohibit same sex marriages. |
*As
of July 18, 2007, New Mexico
same sex couples also do not need to declare intentions to reside
in Massachusetts after marriage, since New Mexico's laws "do
not prohibit marriage between parties of the same gender." |
