Assessors' Office to Conduct Data-Quality Inspections Beginning July 1, 2008: The Provincetown Assessors' Office will be conducting a neighborhood-by-neighborhood data-quality review of its records. The Massachusetts Department of Revenue requires that the Town regularly inventory every property as part of the assessment evaluation process. This process includes an on-site review and description of the interior and exterior of all buildings. In particular, the Assessors' Office will be focusing on properties that have not been inspected within the last six years and properties that sold in calendar year 2007. Inspections will occur Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM over the course of the summer. The entire inspection per property generally takes 15-20 minutes. Your cooperation in assisting the Assessors' Office in this process is very much appreciated. Read Public Notice.

To all persons subject to taxation in the Town of Provincetown: Fiscal Year 2009: In accordance with the provisions of General Laws, Ch. 59, § 29, all individuals, partnerships, associations or trusts, and corporations, residents of or owning property located in Provincetown are hereby notified that they are required, on or before March 1, 2008, to bring in to the Board of Assessors in the form prescribed by the Commissioner of Revenue, true lists of property. See Public Notice.

FY 2008 - 2nd Half - Final (Actual) Tax Bills Due June 26th. Second Half (Final-Actual) FY 2008 property tax bills will be mailed on May 27, 2008 and are due and payable by June 26, 2008. The tax rate for FY08 is $5.12. Applications for abatements must be filed with the Board of Assessors by June 26, 2008. This property tax bill is the final one for Fiscal Year 2008, and contains assessed valuations as of January 1, 2007. The tax bill will also show the amount of preliminary taxes paid, for the first half bill paid last Fall, as a credit against the actual tax for the year. The balance of tax remaining after credit for the preliminary tax will be payable by June 26, 2008. Please note: Included with the bill is a flyer on the "Community Housing Crisis" that the Provincetown Community Housing Council & Provincetown Housing Office has requested be sent to all taxpayers. NEW: Scale Calculation Request Application Procedures:
Beginning May 4, 2007, the Provincetown Assessors' Office has implemented new procedures for Scale Calculation Request Applications. Notable changes: 1) Final Plans, drawn to architectural scale, must be submitted with the Scale Application, 2) Part II of the application will now be completed by the Assessor's Office. 3) The completed application and set of plans will be given directly to the Department of Community Development from the Assessor's Office. A descriptive set of instructions is attached to the Scale Calculation Request Application. Property tax exemption for Affordable Year-round rentals. Provincetown has obtained special state legislation-- Chapter 408 of the Acts of 2002-- which allows our Town to grant property tax exemptions for affordable year-round rental units. FY 2008 - January 1, 2007 assessed values total $2.609-Billion; up 0.43% from January 1, 2006. Provincetown's total assessed valuations increased by 0.43% (Less than 1%) between January 1, 2006 (FY 2007) and January 1, 2007 (FY 2008), the Board of Assessors has announced. The Massachusetts Department of Revenue has approved Provincetown's assessed values for FY 2008 in the total amount of $2,608,614,820. As shown in the table below, the total value of the residential class of property increased by +0.63% in the past year; while the commercial class decreased by -0.71%.

Exemption/Deferral Forms & Brochures
As a resident of Provincetown, you may qualify for a tax exemption. An exemption releases an individual from the requirement to pay all or a portion of his/her property tax obligations. Exemptions may be available to those individuals that meet the various requirements in the following categories: Surviving Spouse, Minor Child, Elderly Person, Blind Person, Disabled Veteran/Surviving Spouse, Surviving Spouse/Minor Child(ren) of Police or Firefighter Killed in the Line of Duty, or Senior Volunteer Work Credit.

Also, Massachusetts allows you to defer your taxes if you are 65 years or older and meet certain ownership, residency, and income/asset qualifications.
