Creating a Community Vision

Ø Executive Order 418 – Town to get $30,000 state grant for approved scope for CD Plan

Ø CD Plan is one of the stated purposes for our Community Development reorganization

Ø CD Plan process produces a Vision Statement – a community consensus on future goals and priorities

Community Vision Statement

Ø The Visioning process is designed to support implementation of the Local Comprehensive Plan (LCP) by building a community consensus around the measures required for its implementation-- many of which will require Town Meeting approval. The starting point is the Town Vision statement in the 2000 Local Comprehensive Plan.

Ø This process offers the opportunity to identify those measures around which there is the greatest community support, and to build constituencies for their subsequent passage. We need to develop a community consensus about the appropriate balance between affordable housing and open space/resource protection; so this can be a key theme.

Ø The purpose of the visioning phase is to identify the points on which residents agree and disagree, and to build a common framework through listening and dialogue.

Community Vision – Planning Themes

Ø Promote interlocal cooperation.

Ø Provide housing across a broad range of income levels.

Ø Protect environmentally sensitive areas, conserve open space, and preserve the historic built environment.

Ø Promote sustainable economic development.

Ø Provide for transportation that focuses on the movement of people and goods rather than automobiles; increase the use of alternatives to automobiles, including bikeways and pedestrian ways.

Ø Build on the character and individuality of Massachusetts communities.
