Special Flood Hazard Area: (Areas subject to flood insurance and National Flood Insurance Program management regulations.)

The land area covered by the floodwaters of the base flood is the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) on the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) maps. The SFHA is the area where the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NIFP) floodplain management regulations must be enforced and the area where the mandatory purchase of flood insurance applies. The SFHA includes ZONES A and ZONES V.

(TAN AREAS) A Zones:

Areas subject to inundation by the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event generally determined using approximate methodologies and/or detailed methods. Because detailed hydraulic analyses have not been performed in some cases, no Base Flood Elevations (BFEs) or flood depths are shown.  When detailed methods have been performed the BFE will be shown on the FIRM. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements and floodplain management standards apply.

(BLUE AREAS) V Zones:

Areas along coasts subject to inundation by the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event with additional hazards associated with storm-induced waves (wave action).  Detailed hydraulic analyses has been performed in some areas and has resulted in the establishment of Base Flood Elevations (BFEs) in some cases.  Flood depths are shown on the FIRM when determined. Mandatory flood insurance purchase requirements and floodplain management standards apply.

(GREEN AREAS) 500 Year Zones:

Moderate flood hazard areas and are the areas between the limits of the base flood and the 0.2-percent-annual-chance (or 500-year) flood. The areas of minimal flood hazard, which are the areas outside the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) and higher than the elevation of the 0.2-percent-annual-chance flood.  Flood insurance is not mandatory.

(WHITE AREAS) Not a Special Flood Hazard Area:

Area located outside a Special Flood Hazard Area.  Flood insurance is not mandatory.
